Hi! My name is Melissa-Kay Grey.

Call me Melissa! With a Masters in Flute Performance and decades of flute experience, I would love to be a part of your journey.

Let’s work on your musical growth

Grow with strong technical fundamentals, daily practice strategies, and opportunities to communicate expressively.

In order to be the best advocate for each student, studio size is now limited to 10-12 students each year.

2022-2023 studio has a few openings left. Email to inquire about lessons

What to expect during your private lessons

All students work on developing tone and technique, sight-reading, selections from the flute repertoire, and musicianship skills each lesson.

Students are provided opportunities to perform during studio classes, recitals, masterclasses, and competitions.

Private students are also encouraged to attend community concerts, and recitals throughout the year

Intermediate and Advanced Flutists

Through a systematic regimen, intermediate and advanced students, of all ages, encounter increasingly demanding repertoire while building techniques. With time and patience, students start to go beyond the instrumentalist into a true musician.

Students of this level are preparing for Solo and Ensemble festivals, regional competitions, progressing in their school program, and preparing for college auditions.

Students in this level can expect to work on:

  • All Major, minor, and chromatic scales and arpeggiated patterns through the gamut of the flute in sixteenth notes, triplets, and interesting rhythmic configurations at crochet - 104 bpm and up

  • Get comfortable with the third octave range of the flute and robust lower register with ease

  • Precise Intonation

  • Sight-read with up to 30 second prep time

  • Technically demanding etudes geared toward their development

  • The flute repertoire from the Baroque to modern music

  • Transposition in all keys

  • Basic music theory and musicianship concepts

Beginner Students

Through the study of music children not only experience the joy of expressing themselves musically, but they develop essential life skills such as improving academic skills, coordination and motor skills, social skills, refining patience, perseverance, and discipline. Lessons boost self-esteem, self-awareness and teach children how to learn.

During the first few years of learning the flute many critical habits are formed that either limit or expand a student’s potential. I place great importance on developing a solid foundation (including healthy posture, beautiful tone production, ear training, practice techniques, and music reading) from the beginning so that students are able to progress with minimal limitations.

Adult Students

The benefits of learning the flute as an adult are numerous. Studying a musical instrument is a challenging, fulfilling, and refreshing pastime. It allows you to deepen your understanding and appreciation of music and provides you with a skill to enjoy throughout your life.

Adult students need a positive outlet. That is what these lessons are for. Some are preparing for community performances, others prefer to enjoy music and play duets. It is a joy to work with all adult musicians.
